Rhythm of nature, rhythm of life, rhythm of music: ecological knowledge and music for sustainable development.

This project will use participatory education and music to empower children to take action to create sustainable communities and protect their environment. Children will learn about local ecology and its value for their communities, threats and impacts on the environment from different types of natural resource use, and climate change. Most important, they will learn about what they can do, working together and in their individual lives, to create change for the better. For example, simple changes in what each child consumes can make a difference; this project will teach children about the impacts of their consumer choices. And, working together with their communities, children can plant trees to create green spaces and community forests that benefit people and the environment.

Activities will be:

  1. Training community environmental educators (local teachers).
  2. Developing curriculum for sustainable communities.
  3. Training student and youth leaders in local ecology and environmental action.
  4. Bright Smiling Music camp for students, to learn about using musical media (including local music) for the purpose of disseminating environmental information.
  5. World Music Festival: “We sing for nature, we dance with the Earth”, as a major communication event to increase awareness of the environment for local people and wider society. Emphasis will be on the Andaman Sea (where the event is held) and the threats it faces from climate change. This event also integrates environmental education events that empower people to make healthy choices in their lives that help rather than hurt nature, and to take action to make their communities more sustainable.
